31 year old gay sex report continues to fuel RW conservatives

This bug appeared in a news report published by Traditionalvalues.org,www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov,www.freerepublic.com,www.catholiceducation.org,factsaboutyouth.com on Oct 22, 2010 by Report quoted by almost every anti gay group and RW conservative groups, especially JOHN R. DIGGS, JR., M.D.. View the original news report.
Bug Type:  Ethical Issue

Please read this excellent review,http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/Articles/000,005.htm it brings up many issues concerning the disbursement of the report and the response rate of 1% pointing to a phenomena called "participation bias". No other report of any kind would be allowed with these response parameters. Also, this is a 31 year old study. Significant sexual behaviors have changed since the onset of AIDS. Personally, I am submitting this bug for one reason: the report states that 22% of gay men engage in "fisting". I have brought this statistic up to many of my gay friends and they laugh hysterically, it's just not true. The Catholic report also does not mention the rate at which heterosexual partners engage in oral or anal sex and never mentions heterosexual men performing oral sex on women. The Catholic report states facts about gay males "barebacking" but never mentions heterosexual unprotected sex; condom use in straight porn is almost unheard of but you see it a lot in gay porn. Finally, how do the individuals who implemented the report know for a fact that gay people filled out the questionnaire? at 1% response rate homophobic individuals could have easily filled out the paperwork and submitted the information, there is no way of knowing.

Certainly sounds like there are a lot of problems with that study!

For MediaBugs to work we'd need to see correctable citations of the study in news reports appearing in media outlets. In other words, we can't really go to an advocacy group like traditionalvalues.org and ask them to correct something because they are promoting an agenda, not doing journalism (as far as I can tell!). Similarly, Free Republic is more of an open conservative forum than a news organization.

So if you can, I'd urge you to find examples in media reports rather than advocacy group/partisan forum posts. Then it's a "media bug" and we can work with it!

Otherwise, we'll close this bug out in a few days. Thanks!
