Accuracy Matters When Targeting Injustice
The headline on an August 21 Colorlines article cries, “Cops Plant Crack in Black Business to Arrest Owner.” The video accompanying the article, however, notes that it was a police informant that actually planted the damning evidence. While the video also reports that police deny "puposefully framing the suspect," it also suggests that informants who have crossed the law may do just about anything to please their police department employers if it means getting off the hook themselves. If that’s a suggestion that the police may have abused their authority to get someone else to their dirty work for them, that might even be worse than if the officers had planted the drugs on the premises of this innocent merchant themselves.
I don’t know for sure but accuracy probably matters when you are targeting injustice. I hope Colorlines can set the record straight here and maybe consider including a “report an error” button on its website to empower its readers to do the same whenever they find it veering off target, even ever so slightly as it has perhaps done in this instance.
