Bug Type:  Simple Factual Error

"WikiLeaks characterized the thrust and parry nature of the struggle by saying on Twitter: 'The first serious infowar is now engaged. The field of battle is WikiLeaks. You are the troops.'"

Actually, John Perry Barlow posted that on Twitter.

It appears that WikiLeaks retweeted the comment:

originally made by John Perry Barlow:

We have emailed the Washington Post seeking a response.

We emailed the Post a second time on Tuesday (Dec 7) about this; no response yet.

I also wanted to note here that recently we've found Twitter to be somewhat useful for getting word to newsrooms about bugs. (Whether and when they actually respond to error reports is another matter.) Yesterday, we noticed that Washington Post columnist Rob Pegoraro had tweeted about a reader's comments helping make the Post's coverage of WikiLeaks accurate on another count; we later tweeted to let him know about this bug. He responded that he'd sent a message to the reporter about it:

We'll see if that helps get a response from the Post (Thanks, Rob) — as of now the segment of the story with the John Perry Barlow quote cited above remains as it was initially published.

The article has since been corrected. (We don't know when since Friday, as we did not hear back directly from the Post.) This notice is now appended at the top:

Correction to This Article
This article about private firms severing their connections to WikiLeaks incorrectly said that the anti-secrecy group had issued the following message on Twitter: "The first serious infowar is now engaged. The field of battle is WikiLeaks. You are the troops." The message was used by WikiLeaks on its Twitter feed but was from John Perry Barlow, a co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
