Better Late Than Never

A Japan Times article aimed at, as its title suggests, "Making your U.S. tax filing from Japan that little bit less … taxing," states:  "The statutory deadline for 2014 for those of us living overseas is June 15, 2015. Americans have it engraved in our minds that it should be April 15.... Read more

Old News Is Not News

On March 28 The Japan Times published a Bloomberg View article by Ramesh Ponnurru entitled, "Starbucks urges baristas to talk about race," adding to the chorus of criticism directed at Starbucks "Race Together" campaign. The problem is Starbucks quit its Race Together initiative a full six days... Read more

Racist Rant in Black and White

In a recent Japan Times commentary entitled, "Kick out the touts who rule Roppongi," Gregory Cark pens a tale of his experience walking through Tokyo's untamed Roppongi district. In the second paragraph Clarke bemoans the fact that "little has been done about the blight of the mostly African touts... Read more

Headline Dead Wrong

On October 15, 2005 The Japan Times got it dead wrong when one of its headlines announced, “Trio who murdered four as minors sent to gallows.” I don’t know where the three convicted felons are now but a story that ran in the Mainichi Shimbun (“Daily News”) and... Read more

Guide Goes Wrong

Punctuation Matters

A November 21 Japan Times headline reads "Japanese wives' secret savings triple husbands" - I guess this means money can buy love. Unless somebody just forgot to hang an apostrophe at the end of "husbands," then I guess it's just about the money. Read more

No Place to Hide

This Saturday The Japan Times (JT) published an op-ed entitled “Right-wing witch hunt signals dark days in Japan” by Professor Jeff Kingston of Temple University Japan, whose searing commentaries have become a regular and welcome feature of the paper. The piece draws heavily... Read more

In a Word

“Female GSDF officer to be assigned to NATO,” screams out a headline in today’s Japan Times. The article goes on to explain that GDSF stands for Ground Self Defense Forces (Japan’s defacto army) but what is the implication of the first word in the headline? Writing... Read more

All "Fowled" Up

When I see the words “gobble power” I immediately think “Turkey.” That is the fowl and not the country, Turkey, and certainly not India. So when an oped published in The Japan Times referred to “India's emergence as a gobble power,” I think the writer... Read more
