iPad sales figures mischaracterized

This bug appeared in a news report published by San Francisco Chronicle | SFGate on Apr 6, 2010 by Ryan Kim. View the original news report.
Bug Type:  Simple Factual Error

The reporter apparently read Apple's press release headline in which the company claimed to have sold 300,000 iPads on the "First Day" (Saturday), or else used incorrect facts from other headlines.

In fact, Apple did not sell that many last Saturday. The total (as Apple later admits in its release) was the number sold through that day, the first day it was available in stores. But Apple had been taking pre-orders for some time and had charged at least some credit cards well before the Saturday store-sales date.

If the story had read "as of the first day," then it would have been technically accurate. But the original story and headline did both say "on the first day."

This seems more semantic than buggy to me. When is a device actually "sold"? Granted, Apple was a tad artificial in holding up delivery of all pre-ordered iPads until the launch date, but I wouldn't really call this one a bug.

We got a response from Vlae Kershner, news director at SFGate: "Since no sales could be completed until the first Saturday in any case, our reporter in consultation with Apple decided it was fair to characterize any pre-orders in the total of first-day sales."

It is false to say sales were not completed until that Saturday. Credit cards were charged ahead of the delivery. The Chronicle's refusal to admit this small error is disappointing but, sadly, not surprising.

Dan, we're going to close this out as "Unresolved" since that seems to be as far as the dialogue is going to go.
