On the field following the 49ers' loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, which dropped the team's record to 0-5, Laurence Scott asked 49ers linebacker Takeo Spikes, "Is 0-5 insurmountable? Can you guys get back in this?"
Spikes answered: "Absolutely not. I don’t think so. I know we still have a chance. Only thing I’m hanging my hat on is: We need to find a spark. Period."
In the studio, Mathai responded "“Wow. ‘Absolutely not’ can they get back into this, if I heard that correctly.”
Later, interviewing 49ers defensive back Nate Clements, Scott said, “After the game, I talked with Takeo Spikes and he said 0-5 may be too difficult to come back from. What are your thoughts?”
Clements' brief interview finished with this quote: "Only thing we can do as a team is stay together, you know, at times like this stay together. We got to claw our way out of this hole."
Back in the studio, Mathai said, “It’s very odd in this day and age, at least on camera, publicly, on record, by saying, ‘Hey look, we don’t think we have a chance anymore unless things dramatically turn around.’ But you see Nate Clements saying that, and just a few moments ago Takeo Spikes telling Laurence Scott he doesn’t think they have a chance at this juncture of the season.”
Neither Clements nor Spikes had said that.
Video is not online that I can see at this writing. I wrote in a little bit more detail about it here http://kingkaufman.tumblr.com/post/1289332376/misquote
I tweeted about the incident, and mentioned both Scott and Mathai's Twitter handle in the tweet. In a tweet timed 11:30, or about a half hour after I posted the bug, Mathai tweeted: "Just to clarify: Takeo Spikes says the#49ers CAN turn it around; I didn't hear him correctly on our live postgame show. C U on TV; 11:30pm."
If there's anything on the KNTV website about it, I can't find it.
Update In response to a tweet of mine asking about it, Mathai tweeted that he "Also clarified on 11:30p show."
