Bug Type:  Simple Factual Error

Writing for the Atlantic Wire (August 26, 2013 – “The New York Times Deigns to Use the F Word”), Rebecca Greenfield exclaims that “In a nearly unprecedented move, the stodgy New York Times printed the f-word in its entirety…”

Hmm, “nearly unprecedented?” Are you kidding me? The Times drops so many F-bombs (in book excerpts) that it would probably make the characters from Good Fellas faint in horror. Just take a look at the catalog compiled on JimRomenesko.com. And that’s just a partial list! I scoured the internet on my own and came up with a NYT F-bomb canon of my own that weighs in at over two dozen book excerpts that include the notorious four letter word.

The work of the "New York Times' prude copy editors" (as the Atlantic Wire refers to them) is really more or less an open book, so FFS let’s set the record straight.

In response to a related bug report, "Not the Times' First (or Second) Time," Salon.com writer, Laura Miller, explains that "the excerpts mentioned in the Romenesko story are book samples posted to the book section of the web site and did not appear in print. If you read the Book Review regularly, ask yourself when you've ever seen a book excerpted there -- you haven't, because they don't have the space. The excerpts are free bonus content published to the web only and are not edited by the Times." She also mentioned in the comments section under the Romenesko.com post cited above that, "The excerpts are free bonus content published to the web only and are not edited by the Times."

I don't know what to say except that I was wrong and I don't know what the f*** I was thinking when I filed this bug report.
